Juvenile Mentoring
Program (JUMP)
JUMP provides mentoring
and group activities for youth ages 12-17 who are referred by the Centre
County Juvenile Probation Office. JUMP provides these youth with a
positive alternative to their current lifestyle, and seeks to place them
in a one-on-one mentoring relationship with a caring adult. More
volunteers are always needed – especially volunteers who are willing to
work with adolescent boys. In addition to mentoring, JUMP organizes
three monthly activities that provide young people a chance to
participate in new experiences. These experiences include: cultural
performances aimed to broaden perspective and awareness of the world;
adventure-based activities (such as rock climbing, white water rafting
and ropes challenge courses) to develop self-confidence, teamwork and
trust; community service to encourage youth to step outside of
themselves and reach out into their communities; educational programs to
inform and instill the importance of being open minded, responsible,
productive and compassionate citizens; and recreational events that
allow these kids to be kids and have fun!
Research has shown that
kids involved in JUMP are: more likely to demonstrate improved classroom
behavior; show improvement in the area of alcohol and drug use problems;
show improvement in the areas of delinquency and violence; show
improvement in social-emotional competence; show increased confidence,
decision-making skills, sense of the future, ability to express
feelings, improved relationships with family, peers and other adults;
and demonstrate an increased awareness of career options, hiring
practices and job-related skills.
Statistics show that
JUMP kids matched in a one-on-one relationship with an adult have a low
recidivism rate (less
likely to repeat criminal behavior). They show improvement in school attendance, self-esteem
and confidence. Overall, matched youth exhibit a much more positive
outlook on life and the future!
