The Family Group Conference is composed of three parts.

1. Information Sharing

bulletBegin the Family Group Conference (FGC) with a ritual i.e. prayer, song, etc. chosen by the family
bulletThe specific reason for referral is stated and the purpose of the FGC is presented
bulletAll invited participants (family and professionals) will voice their understanding of the family’s strengths and major concerns
bulletAny legal issues are addressed along with the non-negotiable concerns which are provided by the referring agency
bulletThe goal of this phase is to provide the participants with a complete picture of the child, family and the immediate safety needs of both

2. Private Family Time
bulletAll professionals attending the conference leave the room at this time
bulletThe family addresses the non-negotiable concerns first, then addresses the most serious concerns shared by the group
bulletA meal is shared among the family members
bulletThe goal of this part is for the family to use the strengths and resources they have to make decisions about the listed concerns

3. Presentation of the Plan
bulletThe family invites the professionals back into the room and presents the plan that was developed during private family time
bulletThe referring agency will either accept the plan as it stands or ask the family to modify the plan
bulletIf changes to the plan are needed the family can ask the professionals to leave or the facilitator can help guide the group through the process
bulletOnce the plan provides a safe, permanent and caring environment, the professionals will then figure out a way to help support the family’s plan
