FAQ

What is Family Group Decision Making (FGDM)?

….Family Group Decision Making is an alternative practice for families to join with relatives, friends and the community to develop a plan for ensuring that they are cared for and protected from future harm in ways which fit their culture and situation.  Family Group Decision Making encourages cross-systems collaboration with a focus on family strengths to improve outcomes for children, families and the community.

How FGDM puts families in charge of keeping their children safe….

Family group decision making (FGDM) offers a non-traditional approach to keeping children safe and ensuring their overall well-being. Families are engaged and empowered to take responsibility for the care and protection of their children.  FGDM includes natural supports; aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, neighbors, pastors, teachers, coaches or close family friends to come together and create their own unique plan to address concerns of neglect/abuse, or crisis and ultimately assure safety. FGDM  is different because families are given private time whereby only family/extended family consider the information presented, deliberate, and make decisions that are then presented back to the professionals and other conference attendees for discussion and approval.
