So, how does the FGDM process work? The FGDM referral process looks like
this:
Typically, the social worker, mental health professional, judge, probation
officer, teacher, family member, etc. refers the case to
the coordinator who
decides whether or not to hold an FGDM meeting by closely working with the
family. The coordinator has numerous pre-meeting activities for which he or she
must have adequate time and flexibility to complete. To increase the meeting's
success, the coordinator thoroughly prepares, the families, the professionals,
and other meeting participants by assuring the group is motivated
to address the same purpose. Before the meeting occurs, it is important that the
coordinator explicitly describes the FGDM process to all participants so they
fully understand their role before, during and after the meeting.
In summary:
 | Referral to the Program Coordinator to hold FGDM meeting |
 | Coordinator/Conference Planner meets with referral source and family to
determine appropriateness |
 | Coordinator/Conference Planner meets with and prepares all participants
prior to the meeting |
 | Family Group Conference planned with the family’s needs in mind (i.e.
Date, Time, Location, Support people, Guest List, Food, etc.) |
 | Family Group Conference held |
