Initial Treatment:
Within the first 24 to 72 hours, youth under the age of 18 are
required to contact parents or guardians to inform them that they
are currently residing at the shelter. After this initial contact,
staff, youth and parents (when applicable) will be asked to work
together to assess the problems that lead to the youth's current
situation. Together, a treatment plan will be created which will
address both the strengths and concerns that the youth, family (when
applicable) and staff has outlined.Counseling:
Youth that reside at the Burrowes Street Youth Haven will receive at
least two individual counseling sessions a week. Family and group
counseling will also be utilized if requested by the youth and/or
their families or deemed beneficial by the Youth Haven staff. The
Youth Haven also works closely with other programs within the Youth
Service Bureau, especially with Family Group Decision Making and
Family Solutions. Both are unique family intervention programs that
may be offered as part of the treatment and/or aftercare plans.
Aftercare:
Prior to the youth's departure from the shelter, another plan (an
aftercare plan) will be created with the youth and their family
(applicable). This plan will address future plans such as changes
made to the home environment that will ensure a higher level of
positively and safety than what previously existed. While
reunification with the family is the ultimate goal, when this is not
possible or appropriate, alternative living arrangements will also
be sought.
After a youth receives services, they are invited to stay in contact
with our facility. Alumni are invited to participate in activities,
program evaluation and continued counseling as the situation
warrants. In addition, throughout the first year post discharge,
youth will be contacted at the 12 hour, 30 day, 6 month and 1 year
marks to follow-up on their living situation and to discuss if there
is a need for further assistance, including referrals.
HOTLINE INFORMATION
The Burrowes Street Youth Haven's hotline is connected to the
National Runaway Switchboard. This system connects youth to the
shelters that are in the same location as the youth calling. From
this conversation, a youth can find out about the shelters' services
and decide whether this shelter is appropriate for him/her. This
line is not only a connection for youth without a safe housing
option, but is also available for families or friends who are
concerned about a youth. By calling prior to escalation, prevention
work can be utilized so that residential services may not ever be
needed. The Burrowes Street Youth Haven will work with families and
friends to find resources and referrals to keep youth with his/her
family.
